The girls head South of La Jolla Cove to wipe out beach for something a little different this day. First thing they find is a fishing pole right at the edge of the water…so the girls decide to get that out of the water before having their fun! Stephanie and Margo had the best time snorkeling with a Harbor Seal and then skin diving into the kelp! What a great snorkel! Thank you to the super sweet Swish Girls for sending us a suit at no cost to do a little testing! Margo tried it out and loved it! VERY CUTE!

Stephanie with Aqualung Travel Package

As all of head off to amazing adventures scuba diving we are burdened with the pesky airlines’ baggage fees; thinking, are we even going to get our gear to the dive site or should we just rent gear that could be old, ugly, and questionable condition? For me, I love my gear and love diving in it everywhere. It’s a trade off, paying the cost of the airline fees versus paying to rent gear. But there must be a solution!

Scuba Diver Girl Margo and I were faced with this same dilemma while packing for Riviera Maya. We planned, packed, repacked, and planned some more. Finally, we realized that the solution was so very easy, Aqua Lung’s Travel Gear.  It is true what they say on their website, “Why rent when you can travel light?”  We picked up two travel packages and our troubles were over!

I pulled my essentials together: bikini, toiletries, day clothes and night clothes, passport, and was ready to pack the dive gear. This was a snap! We started with our perfect size carry on from Aqua Lung the “Departure Bag Carry-On.” This bag holds everything and more.

Opening up the lid of the carry on,  you see a handy checklist imprinted on the inside of the bag. There are also diagrams to show fin orientation in order to help maximize space. The bag has two pockets on the outside front to store things like log books, maps, and electronic devices. There are wheels and a handle that pulls out to two positions making this bag easy to pull through airports as you rush to make your connections!  All packed, the total weight is 16.9lbs…AMAZING!

Next into my “Departure Bag Carry-On” was my Aqua Lung Zuma BCD. We have the super cool ones with Ocean blue accents on the shoulder straps and back pad. This was my second time traveling with the Zuma.

My first time was to Florida, where I rolled up my Zuma and put it in my backpack with my book for the flight. The Zuma travels so well. I love the size and performance of this BCD. Since, I spend more time diving in California than anywhere else, we tried it out on a Scuba Diver Girls dive in the Giant Kelp Forest. I wore my 8mm wetsuit and all the California gear and put the Zuma to work. The lift was incredible. This BCD can go from the cool waters of Southern California to the warm crystal blue Caribbean waters of Rivirera Maya and never miss a beat. I removed the pockets and rolled it up and put it in my travel bag for Akumal, then laid my pockets in next to the fins.

I still had lots of room to go in my carry on and a few more items on the checklist that definitely had to come with me.

The next thing I packed was the Aqua Lung Mikron Regulator. Because we are so keen on keeping our gear from dangling and like to be as stream lined as possible we had our Airsource 3 in place of the octopus for this trip. Mine was the “pink vanilla” Mikron; don’t let the sweet color fool you this is an advanced regulator that packs a punch at the bigger regulators in its class. Others can tell you about the specs of this mini marvel, I can tell you I never missed a breath. It was smooth and easy, even during all my laughing and screams of excitement during our night dives, and my “awwwws” of amazement during our cenote dives. And, these regulators are so easy to pack into the carry-on. Weighing in at only 1.96lbs there is no bulk! If you wanted to really minimize your bulk of pesky hoses, you could always get a computer with integrated air, gauges, etc…. We had our gauges with retractors hooked up and in the carry-on.

My next two items barely weigh anything and take very little room, but are so essential to any snorkel or scuba trip and can really make a difference to enjoying the sights of beautiful water fun. My Aqua Lung Micromask and Impulse 3 Flex snorkel really did the trick bringing the critters in to view and opening my water world to me. My micromask fit really well, had no leaks, and looked so awesome in pictures!

So, technically, I was all packed. But I still had plenty of room in my travel bag so in went my 5mm Aqua Lung jumpsuit for dives in the Cenotes and my 3mm jumpsuit for the ocean dives. I threw in an extra mask, my booties, gloves, dive light, a couple more bikinis and I was ready for Riviera Maya fun. I did a final check of the list inside the carry on to be sure I didn’t miss anything…oops…a hood. Well I decided no need for that in the tropical waters of Riviera Maya. Now my bag was full and I was ready to go!

The gear worked wonderfully while we were in Riviera Maya! We were able to dive issue free with no worries as to using rental gear. We had no trouble carrying our gear from place to place because it was so light! We were also pleased to have our own wetsuits, which of course were much cleaner than anything we saw others renting! Scuba Diver Girls give a big thumbs up to this travel package!

On our trip back to California we had our checked bags for all the gifts we bought while in Riviera Maya. Luckily, we had our dive gear in our Aqua Lung carry-on, to free up the gift space. Even after getting through security we had no problem packing all the gear and goodies back in the carry-on and heading back to the States.  Can’t wait to pack my bag again and head off with Scuba Diver Girl Margo to our next Amazing Adventure with our Dive Gear.

After spending a fantastic day with our naturalist guide, Tania S. Medina Albor of Community Tours Sian Ka’an, we said “good-bye” and we found ourselves heading off to yet more of Riviera Maya’s amazing adventures (see our trip report from Sian Ka’an here).

Heading northeast along Carretera Federal 307, the main highway from Cancun, we jet up to Tulum. Carretera Federal 307 is one of the easiest and best kept freeways I have traveled in Mexico. It is well maintained and fairly easy to navigate. Just be sure you get directions to your destination with descriptions of the turn off; many main turn offs to the best kept secrets of Riviera Maya are marked only by small signs at edge of the tropical forest. The town of Tulum sits northwest of the beaches, where all the resorts, boutique hotels, and Cabanas bask in the sun hugging the coastline of the Caribbean Sea and the tropical forests of Riviera Maya.

After a quick stop in town, for some travels to view a Mayan church, it was time to visit the beaches that I only saw in Corona commercials. Yep, Tulum sports those mesmerizing beautiful white sandy, crystal blue water beaches in commercials.

We drove along the Caribbean Sea eying water the color of Aquamarine; the sandy beaches the color of light beige powdered sugar. I was in heaven.  I was ready to jump from the moving car and let the breeze blow through my hair as I disappear into Tulum.

We arrived at our unique Tulum escape, Om Tulum Hotel Cabanas and Beach Club, and my waiting was over. Om is definitely unique. Om’s atmosphere is small, friendly and relaxing. Very different from the large resorts further north on the Yucatan Peninsula, which have a lot to offer as well, but in a much larger fabricated atmosphere. Margo and I walked along the lush path over a tranquility bridge, eying the selection of rooms we would be staying in on our next visit to Riviera Maya’s Tulum.  The rooms are “minimalistic” in design giving back to the amazing natural environment.

The facilities are situated such that a Scuba Diver Girl or traveler, for that matter, has a constant view of the Caribbean Sea. Om’s restaurant overlooking the beach and Caribbean Sea ‘serves grilled fresh seafood, tropical salsas, and authentic Napolitan-style thin crust pizza.’ There lounge bar offers specialty tequilas, tropical beverages, and even hookahs all the while engulfed in the light breezes from the sea. For those that must mix business and pleasure or just want to send off an email to make friends and family jealous, internet access is available at the restaurant and lounge.

Our destination was the Om Tulum Hotel Cabanas and Beach Club. This place knows how to mix fun with the right amount of relaxation. (Always check the itinerary of the resort you are heading to in order to get what you really want from your travels. The Riviera Maya loves fiestas and siestas! ) We hit the beach with our friends. The club’s bar opens right on the sandy beach offering friends tantalizing beverages and food, in the comfort of shaded and sun drenched lounge chairs.

We headed out of the water, returned the snorkel gear, and joined our friends on the lounge chairs for some beverages and conversation. We met travels from all over the world. There were a few young ladies visiting Tulum from Mexico City, they pointed out how safe and still fun Tulum is for the traveling “girl.”

Our quick trip to Tulum was filled with what Riviera Maya has always been known for: hospitality, adventure, and beauty.

While at the hotel, we learned that “OM” is a mystical symbol of spiritual peace, a religious syllable of piety sacred to the Hindus. When uttered in prayer, it awakens the inner self to transcend the mundane and be in touch with the universe.  As we were leaving, we decided that OM is the perfect word to describe our experience! We highly recommend this property to anyone in search of complete relaxation!

It is no wonder that everyone that comes to Tulum wants to stay forever.
