Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, one common theory that characterizes the division between the two sexes… now to what extent should this battle impose itself on the diving world? Today’s women want to be more active; more are pushing their own limits physically and really enjoying it!

Scuba diving is now a level playing field, the female populations of certified divers, Instructors and dive masters have been increasing for the past few years and so has the demand for scuba gear that fit our needs.  Our bodies shape and complexion demands different lines, adjustment and distribution on the scuba gear… it takes more than adding a pink line or “girlie” design on an already existent piece of equipment to target women.

Some manufactures (like Aqualung) are opening their mind and ears to welcome ideas in order to provide  better customer service;  try outs, critics, suggestions are being appreciated to improve the quality and the comfort of the ladies scuba gear. But on the other hand there are companies affected by the poor economy and declining sales and as a result the products with low demand are taken away from their production lines and yes, generally speaking that will be ours.

Women divers need to speak up! Manufacturers want to hear what you have to say!

Here are a few things you can do to help, guide, and orientate the manufactures:

• When purchasing new gear, ask a lot of questions and discuss concerns about the use, the fit, and pros and cons. Talk to that manufacturers sales rep about whether the product was designed for a unisex market or if they designed it specifically for women or men.
• When servicing your gear speak directly to the technician. They are normally the ones who assist with the manufactures seminars and voice your concerns to the managers.
• If there was a product (for women) that you liked and has been discontinued, ask for the reason, the sales rep at the shop usually has contact with the sales rep at the manufacturer.  If more women speak up when  good product is removed from production, the manufacturer may see that it was a mistake!
• Attend gear demo days such as DUI’s DOG (Drysuit Owners Group) Days. You can try out all their products and get amazing feedback directly from them.

There is no turning back girls we are only going to get bigger and stronger! Manufacturers are watching and listening! I recently wrote about how much I love my new Aqualung Pearl! What I didn’t mention is the fact that buying any new piece of scuba equipment is a big investment and keeping your equipment clean and maintained will not only keep you safe…but keep you out of the poor house!  Whether it be your BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask and snorkel, fins etc. all scuba equipment requires regular maintenance and cleaning! My good friend and owner of the K2 dive shop on-line and in North Hollywood, Tevis Verrett gave us a great top 10 list for keeping that BCD clean and in great working order!

1. Have a professional SCUBA technician maintain your BCD regularly, at least as often as the manufacturer guidelines suggests.
2. Make sure it fits properly and you are properly trained in using the equipment.
3. Disconnect all hoses from BCD after diving and inspect all connections for proper functioning.
4. Remove and inspect weight pockets. If they are Velcro weight pockets, inspect and clean Velcro with a toothbrush. Do not leave dirt on the Velcro. If they are locking weight pockets, make sure they snap in with a nice loud snap. A weak snap is a sign of a loose connection. In either case, make sure pockets release easily — but not too easily!
5. Remove all knives and attachments and empty pocket…clean all separately.
6. Soak outside of BCD in fresh water after every dive. The longer the better…go don’t go crazy!
7. Fill BCD with water and air, rinse the inside thoroughly, shake vigorously with air and water…repeat twice.
8. Make sure your run fresh water through the inflator valve (inflate BCD with water and air and then empty through inflator valve by holding the hose low and deflating. Use a toothbrush to clean around the inflator and deflator buttons.
9. Fill BCD with air and water and use dump valves to empty bladder. Remove and inspect dump valves looking for rust on springs…replace if rusty!
10. Hang your BCD to dry…do not dry it on the concrete. Once dry, inspect your BCD. If you find salt stains or dirt…spot clean or repeat cleaning process again.
