Two last minute openings on Cocos Island Shark & Turtle Tagging Expedition

Posted By admin on April 21, 2010

Join me, Todd Steiner, STRP’s executive director, on an expedition to Cocos Island National Park. These trips rank as my most memorable lifetime experiences, and offer some of the most spectacular opportunities to view and study the incredible marine biodiversity of the East Pacific.

Cocos Island National Park and World Heritage site is located 530 km southwest of Costa Rica.  The site is one of the best diving spots in the world, and holds perhaps the richest biodiversity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.  Green and hawksbill sea turtles are common and we will see schools of scalloped hammerheads, sometimes numbering more than 100 individuals on a single dive.  Other regularly observed species include white tip reef sharks, silver tip sharks, Galapagos sharks, black tip sharks, silky sharks, marbled rays, eagle rays and bottlenose dolphins.  The special treat of any diving expeditions, whale sharks, are also occasionally observed.  Endless schools of jacks also swarm the island.  For more information, click here.

Since 2004, PRETOMA has teamed up with the Shark Research Institute to carry out a five-year shark census in Cocos Island, and study the migratory movements of the sharks that live there.  Thus far, eight expeditions have visited the Island, with research focusing on the short and long range movements of schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks.  In total, nearly 50 sharks have been tagged with acoustic telemetry and 4 acoustic receivers are currently deployed on the island.

In March 2009, the first two satellite transmitters were attached to green sea turtles at Cocos, and on this trip, several addition sea turtle satellite transmitters will be deployed.

From May 27-June 6, 2010 AND/OR from August 24-Sep 3, 2010, you will have the opportunity to participate in one of these fascinating expeditions, and live the experience of a lifetime!  Dive among schooling hammerheads, sea turtles, schools of thousands of fish, and assist researchers, and support conservation efforts directly at the site!

Expedition members MUST be intermediate divers, with PADI or NAUI membership, and have personal DAN insurance.  Nitrox is also available for certified divers.  Certifications will be requested at the site.

The dive expedition will be supported by the experienced and well-known dive company Undersea Hunter S.A, which has been running expeditions to Cocos Island since 1990.  On the first trip (May 27), we will be using the Argo, a live-aboard 130-foot dive vessel for 15 passengers.  The Argo carries a three-person submersible that will be available (at additional cost) for participants who wish to explore deep depths.  On the August trip, we will be using the UnderSea Hunter , a live-aboard 90-foot dive vessel for 14 passengers and theParticipants will be divided into two group dives, which will be under the supervision of an experienced Dive Master/Rescue Diver.

Expedition members are expected to arrange their own travel to Costa Rica.  The expedition begins with pick up at the hotel of your choice on day 1 at around 10:00 am, and ends when we return you to the hotel of your choice on last day at around 12:00 noon.  We recommend Hotel Rincón de San José (http://www.hotelrincondesanjose.com/), or Hotel Grano de Oro (http://www.hotelgranodeoro.com/).  If you would like assistance to book hotels, contact PRETOMA (info@tortugamarina.org).

May 27-June 6, 2010 on the Argo:
Cost:       $5,090.00 (includes all meals and nitrox refills).
$   245.00 (Cocos Island National Park entrance fee).

Travel experts say these breathtaking spots offer unique, inspiring beauty.

Going on the recommendations of several frequent travelers and travel experts, we found different hotels around the world, each providing jaw-dropping views. Among them are jungle scenes, ocean vistas, and massive displays of ice, rocks and valleys–all in some of the most unique locations in the world.

Lapa Rios

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Lapa Rios, Costa Rica

Set in one of the last remaining lowland tropical rain forests in Central America, this Costa Rica eco-resort has something for everyone, from beach bunnies to anyone who ever wore a “Save the Rainforest” button. Stay in bungalows three through eight for the best views; they all sit on a high hill, giving them the best angle over the rain forest and ocean. In 2003 Lapa Rios received the top level Certification for Sustainable Tourism, so guests can rest easy that they’re not intruding on the pristine natural surroundings.

Wolwedans

NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Wolwedans, Namibia

This resort leaves 1,000 hectares of untouched land for every bed at the resort, so each separate camp provides sweeping views of virgin dunes, plains and the Nubib Mountains. Guests staying here can indulge in a private scenic drive or a hot air balloon ride over the reserve, then return to watch the sunset from the comfort of the Mountain View Suite, a cozy private lodge that is almost entirely open to the outdoors.

Featuring whitewashed walkways, private pools and colorful doors that open onto an endless expanse of bright blue ocean, the Foivos and Armonia Suites are the most lush.

Learn About: Utopia Village in Utila, Honduras Bay Islands

Posted By admin on April 21, 2010

Article by: Scuba Diver Girl Mary Schriefer Gorden from Plano, Texas

Texins Dive Club enjoyed hearing from guest speaker Angelika Lukacsy, owner and president of Utopia Village in Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras, during the club’s April 13, 2010 meeting at Outback Steakhouse in Plano, Texas – a Dallas suburb.

Angelika, a Dallas native, worked for Corgan Associates Architects for 14 years. Her job took her from Dallas to London and London to New York, where she lived mere blocks from the Trade Towers. A combination of that fateful 9/11 day and her longtime desire to design and own a small eco-friendly resort made for an interesting, 2-year process of designing and building her dream – the all-inclusive Utopia Village resort.   She told the Texins Dive Club members that, after life threw her the “curve ball” of 9/11, she chose not to “strike out” but to “start a new game.”

She set out to explore the eastern and western Caribbean Sea, learning and loving to scuba dive and discovering what she considers the “premiere dive location in the Caribbean” – the tiny Honduran bay island of Utila — to build her dream resort. With little to no money, Angelika enlisted the assistance and partnership of her Texas friends and a bank loan to put her dream into motion.   Utopia Village resort is “casual and luxurious at the same time,” said Angelika, architect and co-owner of the resort with several female and a few male fellow Texans.

The 16-room eco-friendly resort is located on 500 feet of jungle beachfront, offering both bungalows and hotel-like rooms, first-class meals, unlimited shore diving with a sensational wall merely 50 feet from shore, snorkeling, boat diving a dive valet service.   “Utila has more than 100 buoyed dive sites with diverse terrain for scuba enthusiasts to explore,” said Angelika. And, Utila is just minutes from the larger island of Roatan, Honduras, which holds its own allure for adventurists and diving enthusiasts.

Utila and its surrounding islands are home to the largest fish in the sea, the Whale Shark. “Sightings are year round,” explained Angelika, however visitors can see the beautiful giants mostly in November and December. “When the whales move, they generally move down, not out, depending upon the climate and conditions,” she said.   Utopia Village is the only eco-permitted resort on Utila. The resort staff oversees weekly clean up dives and periodic Project Aware events, in which resort guests are welcome to participate. Utopia’s owners are also proud of the fact that they have employed and trained several island locals to help build the resort and as cooks, dive boat operators and luxury spa technicians, to name a few.   “If you’re looking to ‘get away from it all’ and for a “peaceful, stress-free environment, consider our island retreat of Utopia Village,” Angelika told Texins Dive Club members.

The resort includes a mere 2 ½ hour flight from Houston, Texas, to Roatan, Honduras, and then a puddle jump to tiny Utila and the Utopia Village resort. She shared several specials with guests, which can be found on the Utopia website at: http://www.utopiadivevillage.com/

The Texins Dive Club was founded 1958 and comprises mostly Texas Instruments employees (current and former) plus other interested Texas scuba diving enthusiasts. Visit Texins Dive Club online at: http://www.texinsdiveclub.com/
