On the remote and magnificent island of Kadavu, Matava – Fiji’s Premier Eco Adventure Resort boasts secluded splendour whilst also satisfying your spirit of adventure. Bordered by the Great Astrolabe Reef Matava is a small and intimate getaway. Matava is designed to blend with its natural environment. Traditional thatched Fijian bures nestled in the rainforest and set amidst lush tropical surroundings, accommodate up to 22 guests and offer privacy, comfort and superb ocean views.

As a PADI certified resort and only a stone’s throw away from the Great Astrolabe Reef, Matava offers the perfect environment to scuba dive in Fiji , snorkel, surf , fish, kayak with opportunities to trek, visit villages , bird watch or simply relax and unwind.

Drift to sleep in lush tropical surrounding to the soothing roar of the waves breaking on the distant reef and be awakened to the call of exotic native wildlife.

Traditional thatched Fijian ‘bures’ with polished timber floors, louvre windows, timber four poster beds and private decks are nestled in the rainforest to offer privacy, comfort and superb ocean views. The romance of the tropics is enlivened with custom made mosquito nets on all of our beds. All these new design bures have private facilities, expansive private decks as well as all lighting and hot water supplied by our eco-friendly Solar systems.

Our Oceanview Bures are across the stream and offer spectacular panoramas of The Great Astrolabe Reef and surrounding offshore islands.

Our top-end Honeymoon Bures are scattered back up on the hill behind Matava to ensure complete privacy and stunning vista from the expansive full length picture windows across the ocean.

Diving

The Great Astrolabe Reef is the world’s fourth largest barrier reef and is Fiji’s largest living organism. It extends along the entire southern side of Kadavu and stretches for over 120km. It is rated as one of the world’s premier diving locations offering a great diversity and spectacle in coral structures and marine life.

There are over 20 world-class dive sites for divers of all levels within a 5-minute to half hour boat ride from our PADI Certified Dive Center at Matava. We dive the reef extensively and escort you through the wonders of this hidden paradise. We cater for all levels of diver from beginner to experienced and take you to sites varying in depths, currents and visibility ranging from 20 – 50 m! You can expect a kaleidoscope of colourful corals and wonderful marine life – we can assure you that you won’t be disappointed.

Other Activities & Amenities

Fishing: Superb blue water Sport and Big Game Fishing awaits you from your base at Matava. Surrounded by hundreds of miles of fringing coral, the island also has 50 miles of great barrier reef forming sheltered lagoons and steep outer reef drop-offs. You can be trolling in 1,000 meters of water within 10 minutes of the resort for big Pacific blue marlin or working light tackle along the outer fringes of the barrier reef for sailfish, and Kadavu’s famous monster wahoo.

The resort has a Tag & Release policy on all billfish and a Catch & Release on all other species. We do however take home dinner and our cooks will be delighted to prepare your catch for the dinner plate. Sashimi, Kokoda, griller mahi mahi, baked trevally … You catch it, we cook it! We are holders of 47 Fiji National fishing records.

Sea Kayaking: Get into one of our sea kayaks and glide through crystal clear waters. A startled ray may fly past and electric blue tropical fish pulsate in their coral habitat as you drift over the brilliant corals. Explore the deep and indented bays, turquoise lagoons and rocky islets and meander through the winding waterways within the mangrove forest. We also offer fully tailored all day guided kayak trips or overnight kayak trips , which include staying at local villages.

Snorkeling: For reef lovers who enjoy the sun on their back, the Astrolabe Reef also provides a superb snorkeling experience. Whether exploring one of the island’s best fringing reefs right in front of the resort or taking a short boat ride to the main reef itself, you’ll be dazzled by the amazing array of corals and fish for which the Astrolabe is famous. All the snorkeling equipment you’ll need is available for hire from the resort’s dive shop.

Trekking: Walk or trek through lush verdant rainforest ascending the hills to reveal stunning views of The Great Astrolabe Reef, then descend to beautiful white pristine beaches. There are no roads around Matava, only a network of paths that link one village to the next. Then plunge into one of the many cool, refreshing waterfalls and pools that slice down through the rugged highlands and watch as the local children leap from dizzying heights.

Take a guided nature walk to discover the local flora and fauna or learn of the traditional uses of plants with a local medicine man. All treks have been established in conjunction with local villages.

Surfing: The Great Astrolabe Reef, long regarded as a world-class scuba diving destination, also provides perfect uncrowded and hassle-free surfing. There are three passages (breaks in the reef) that produce long barreling waves anywhere from 2-12 feet. Each passage offers varied conditions that will suit all styles and levels. Intermediate to advanced surfing skills are required.
