Diving
The Mesoamerican reef is located 200 meters from the beaches of Playa del Carmen and runs from Cancun all the way to Honduras. It is the second largest barrier reef in the world with hundreds of coral types and fish to make the diving educational and fun. Most dives are drift dives and all diving is done from boats with dive sites no farther than 20 minutes form the shore. The most famous reef is Tortuga, meaning Turtle in Spanish and there is a guarantee of turtle sightings at any time of the year. In the winter the bull sharks migrate to one diving area and are happy to be observed to by divers (the Abyss Dive Center is a no-feeding dive center), with the summer having the Tarpons and Whalesharks migrating to the area. Whalesharks can only be observed by snorkeling but this experience is a once in a life time opportunity to see the largest fish in the ocean.

The area is very famous for the cenotes (say-note-tays) which are fresh water caverns that can be seen by open water divers under the supervision of cave certified guides. Cave diving is only completed by cave certified divers. Cenotes are an overhead environment that is filled with fresh water and ancient formations, stalagmites and stalagtites. This is a must see environment and a must do dive!
