It’s Not Just Pink

Posted By admin on October 21, 2009

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, one common theory that characterizes the division between the two sexes… now to what extent should this battle impose itself on the diving world? Today’s women want to be more active; more are pushing their own limits physically and really enjoying it!

Scuba diving is now a level playing field, the female populations of certified divers, Instructors and dive masters have been increasing for the past few years and so has the demand for scuba gear that fit our needs.  Our bodies shape and complexion demands different lines, adjustment and distribution on the scuba gear… it takes more than adding a pink line or “girlie” design on an already existent piece of equipment to target women.

pink-gearSome manufactures (like Aqualung) are opening their mind and ears to welcome ideas in order to provide  better customer service;  try outs, critics, suggestions are being appreciated to improve the quality and the comfort of the ladies scuba gear. But on the other hand there are companies affected by the poor economy and declining sales and as a result the products with low demand are taken away from their production lines and yes, generally speaking that will be ours.

Women divers need to speak up! Manufacturers want to hear what you have to say!

Here are a few things you can do to help, guide, and orientate the manufactures:

  • When purchasing new gear, ask a lot of questions and discuss concerns about the use, the fit, and pros and cons. Talk to that manufacturers sales rep about whether the product was designed for a unisex market or if they designed it specifically for women or men.
  • When servicing your gear speak directly to the technician. They are normally the ones who assist with the manufactures seminars and voice your concerns to the managers.
  • If there was a product (for women) that you liked and has been discontinued, ask for the reason, the sales rep at the shop usually has contact with the sales rep at the manufacturer.  If more women speak up when  good product is removed from production, the manufacturer may see that it was a mistake!
  • Attend gear demo days such as DUI’s DOG (Drysuit Owners Group) Days. You can try out all their products and get amazing feedback directly from them.

There is no turning back girls we are only going to get bigger and stronger! Manufacturers are watching and listening! Its time to be vocal about what you use when you dive…what you like and dislike and why!  Feel free to leave us comments here or on our Facebook Fan Page or our Facebook Profile! We will happily pass your comments on to manufacturers.

  • Great topic! I did a poll on the SoCal PADI Instructor Blog earlier this year and we had some diverse answers in regards to pink scuba gear for women.

Here's the link to our article and poll

We also got some awesome feedback from Susan at DUI.

all my gear used to be Pink, now it's just my fins
WHY??? I wore it all out, 4 pairs of Pink Tusa boots, MANY lycra skins, 6 pair gloves, and my harveys custom wet suit got stiff & shrunk, I have owned 3 Pink & 2 Turq BCD's, I traded some for a newer female model but the last 3 developed leaks, can't patch the bladder less kind
I dont use a snorkle, and my masks have a tendency to grow legs lately

PS a note about pink; on a dive in Fl the only reason the dive boat spotted us as we drifted away was i was able to wave my pink fins in the air, they never saw my buddys blue fins
So please PUSH the MFG's to make bright colored gear again
I can't even find decent pink gear on E-bay anymore, and this PALE washed out color pink stuff I saw this past year isn't worth the effort we want Bright PINK

I believe Aqua Lung makes a back plate and harness (Apex?) Even in an extra small harness, the sholders are too wide, making the chest strap a must.So it would be nice if the chest strap were just a bit higher in the chest and not so much on the ...well you know. I am going to have to think about the rest. I've been making do with what ever is available. So I think it would be nice if something were actually made for a woman. But I would like to say that pink is NOT a must for all girl divers, or some kind of teal or purple...it would be nice if it were just made with woman body in mind.

  • Thank you for this post, I just saw an "article" on one of the larger online equipment retailer sites explaining what to look for in equipment for women and was a little shocked that basic message was "if it's pink, it's for women". I thought it was "if it fits, it's for you". I don't pay much attention to color though, even though I'm an instructor, most of my gear is black, which I know doesn't help with visibility. That's what multiple ankle strobes are for :)

Anita if you are looking to dive with back plate and/ or harness check out Dive Rite “transplate” It’s a hybrid (plate and transpac) and you are able to adjust every single feature on it including the chest straps. Go on their website http://www.diverite.com/education/library/video/ and check TransPac fitting for women, hope this help… I dive the regular transpac and I love it :)

Great article, Occhi! Can't wait to learn to dive someday!
  • Agreed and that is why Atomic has come out w/ pink and purple line of mask, fins snorkels and reg covers. We also have all our masks in a smaller narrow fit.
